What are OLED TVs?
OLED TVs work by using only red, green, and blue light to create an image on your screen. Electricity runs through specific materials which causes the glow in these colors. No other technology out there can create light like this. It’s thanks to this technology that 4K HDR OLED TVs are thinner, lighter, and more energy efficient. They also perform better, more than any other TV on the market. Each individual pixel can be faded out to create a complete black. This makes for an impressive disparity ratio, and that’s not just marketing propaganda, it really works, and we’re going to give you all the information you need to know in order to buy the best OLED 4K TV.
So what does OLED stand for?
OLED stands for organic light-emitting diodes. It’s a type of display technology that allows for darker black levels on ultra-thin screens, while simultaneously making the TV more efficient and eco-friendly. So how does it work? An organic, carbon-based film is placed between two conductors. When an electrical current is passed through them, it emits light. This process occurs for every individual pixel in the display.
Currently, TVs with OLED panels come in two varieties: RGB and “White.” RGB works similarly to a plasma model TV that most people are familiar with, using separate red, green, and blue subpixels to create an image. White, on the other hand, works differently. It works by sandwiching together red, green, and blue materials that create a white light when powered up. The white light then passes through a color filter and creates colored subpixels. Another great advantage of these TVs are that they’re easier to scale and upscale to different screen sizes as well as up to 4K resolutions. They can also have compatibility with HDR10 content. Adding to these benefits, many models come with a built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as HDMI 2.1 and USB inputs for full compatibility with your other media devices.
OLED vs LED
OLED TV’s offer much wider viewing angles than LED TV’s, which will lose contrast and color as you move away from the front of the screen. The cause of this is the LCD’s backlight, and the shutter effect of the screens pixels. Unlike their LCD counterparts, QLED’s pixels self-light which completely eliminates the issue, allowing the TV to be viewed from any angle, and still retain its quality. They also have incredible refresh rates. This is a major advantage if you have a large amount of people all watching the same TV show in the living room. For this reason, if you host a lot of viewing parties, an OLED TV is the go to option for you.
OLED vs LCD
Simply put, LCD screens use either a backlight or edge lighting to illuminate their pixels, while OLED pixels produce light on their own. What this means is that the light on OLED displays can be controlled individually, while LCD screens can’t. For example, if you took a LCD TV into a completely dark room, you would notice that the dark portions of the picture still have light to them; where if you brought an OLED TV into that same room, the dark portions of the picture would be “perfect black”. LCD screens also have the same shutter effects as LED screens, which means it will blur if you’re not looking at it from the front. So just like before, the OLED TV is the best choice to make. OLED vs QLED
A QLED TV uses quantum dot technology on an LED panel. These quantum dots are contained in a film which forms just one of many layers making up a QLED TV. The purpose of this technology is that it improves the brightness and color compared to “standard” LCD TVs. Because of the quantum dot tech, QLED TVs are brighter than OLED, and offer a better contrast of colors. However, the technology used for the quantum dot to function means the screen will never reach “true black” like the OLED TVs.
Is OLED Worth it?
It’s easy to see why people get excited about 4K UHD OLED technology. They tick all the boxes of a dream television: impossibly slim, incredible contrast for greater picture quality and, possibly best of all, they are extremely energy efficient, making them cheap to run and beneficial to the environment. When paired with technology like Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, or a powerful soundbar, OLED Smart TVs delivers a viewing experience like no other. Still not convinced? There’s also connectivity options like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can control the TVs apps and streaming services with only your voice. This make it an excellent addition to any home theater. Gamers will also appreciate the image quality these TVs provide when displaying modern game consoles. They also have amazing gaming features such as G-SYNC compatible, FreeSync, and more. You can also save much needed table space by hanging the TV with a wall mount.
