Trying to figure out how to have fun at home? Are your kids driving you nuts with boredom? Perhaps, you’re exploring for additional things to do because it is summer, and you love to be outside. Whatever your reason, having fun outdoor summer activities available for you and your family can make everyone’s favorite season memorable and fun.
From children to seniors, there are a zillion and one entertaining things to do right at home in the comfort of your own backyard. Combine your favorite activities and foods for a backyard event of the season, or just to hang out with your family on the weekend. The summer goes by fast. Have fun, and feel free to express your inner youth and vice versa accordingly.
Activities for Everyone
With school out, it’s important to grow your list of things to do outside in the summer. The more activities you have available, the less likely you or your family will tire of any of them. Plus, it’s a great way to save money from going out to town every weekend. Why seek adventure elsewhere when it can be available right where you live?
The first activity, just to get it out of the way, is doing chores. Summer is a great opportunity to make an event out of washing the car or hosing down dirty items and toys from inside the house. You can also defend yourself with the hose while the kids have a water fight. There are countless amounts of water games you can create using water balloons and sprinklers such as water pinatas, relays, water balloon baseball, a do-it-yourself slippy slide, and human car wash. I recommend researching further to create your own water “Olympic games” that caters to your family’s style.
Water activities can provide you with many things to do on a hot day, but nothing is better than cooling off and chilling in your pool. A pool will keep your kids busy while you wash the car or BBQ lunch and give you an awesome place to relax with a drink while you listen to a football game or music.
Outdoor activities don’t need to be intricate rocket science (although building rockets does sound like a fun weekend science project). Try some simple things that are enjoyable and productive like making a few snack trays and sitting outside with a good book or to complete your school or work assignments. You can be eco-friendly by creating a customized laundry line instead of using a dryer, or as I mentioned earlier, plant a garden.
Another simple yet fun thing to do is go for a bike ride. Enjoy a few laps around the block in between your summer backyard games or even make a competitive sport of it with races and obstacle courses. Take this idea a step further with an exciting electric scooter or hoverboard which can provide teachings on electricity, motors, and green energy while giving you a classic pastime with a modern twist.
One of my personal favorite outdoor activities is flying my drone. This is so much fun that literally hours can fly by without notice. There are so many cool things you can do with a drone. First, drones are known for being able to capture amazing aerial images and footage, try taking some footage of your backyard of your family. There are modeling software programs that can even create a 3d map of your property. Use your drone to help assist you with your chores by checking your home’s roof and gutters for repairs and maintenance. Create your own aerial track for drone races and obstacle courses. Plus, in addition to the fun, these gizmos can provide insight and learnings in modern engineering, space, flight, and technology. Do you have a up and coming rocket scientist or engineer in your household?
Let’s talk food for a minute. Everyone needs to eat so why not make it a fun experience as well. Having a BBQ is an easy idea that everyone enjoys but try and jazz it up a bit with a picnic, good music, and custom-made summer cocktails for the grown-ups. Cap off your meal and day with a nice bonfire to sit around, tell stories and make s’mores.
After a full day of exciting activities and great food it’s time to relax. Make it a movie night. Whether you are enjoying the summer night in your pool, backyard campsite, or cozying up in a hammock, there are great outdoor projectors that can transform your backyard into a movie theater.
For the deep wanderers in life who have a curiosity of all existence, think about stargazing through a telescope. Outer space is beautiful, romantic, educational, and fun. Try to find your favorite constellations and this particular year, you can easily spot most planets in the sky as well. For guidance, there are websites and phone apps that can help direct you where to look.
Activities for kids
Although kids can partake in all activities I already mentioned, but for this section, I will focus on things for children. For the kids you want to keep the activities simple and fun. Join them to reconnect with your inner youth! Most of these summer outdoor games and activities won’t need any explanation.

Activities for Adults
Now that there are activities to keep the kids busy, or perhaps, there are no children around. This calls for some time for the adults. Of course, there are entertaining things to do from all these incredible ideas, but let’s look at a few more just for adults.
- Throw a party for friends and neighbors
- Better sporting activities such as cornhole, badminton, bocce ball, tug of war, and croquet. Feel free to turn these into drinking games if that’s your thing
- Make it a date night – A beautifully candle lit BBQ dinner, music, dancing, firepit to cozy up to, stargazing, swimming pool and movie are all things you can do for a romantic evening in your backyard. Ensure to decorate the area with flowers and other gorgeous embellishments
