Most of you already have your “ways” of doing Thanksgiving. Maybe it’s the way your mother did it or your extended family. But as you know situations change, family members move away, get married and start families. Although you’ll probably want to keep some of the traditions alive, you’re family may want to start some new ones of your own. Check out these Thanksgiving tradition ideas you can start with your family!
Construct a family tablecloth- Use a plain white tablecloth and fabric markers to personalize your Thanksgiving table before you set out the turkey and stuffing. Have each person write what they are thankful for on the cloth. Then sign and date it before the meal begins. Use the same tablecloth each year so you can read the old memories before you add new ones.
Thanksgiving tree– This is a fun way to share what Thanksgiving means to each person. You can free-cut the shape of a tree with lots of branches from a brown sheet of paper or butcher paper. Then tape it to your dining room wall or the refrigerator. You could even use a branch or twigs from a tree placed in a vase. Cut out leaf shapes from various fall shades of paper. Let each family member write something for which they are thankful on a leaf. Then attach it to the tree with tape.
Stay connected- If you’re not close to your loved ones during Thanksgiving, you can still be together virtually. Do a video call before dinner, or coordinate your mealtimes so you can say grace together and share thankfulness while Facetiming on your Samsung Galaxy 8 inch Wi-Fi Tablet from Buydig.com.
Let everyone toast- Take a bottle of wine from your wine cooler and let everyone raise their glass to make a toast for what they are thankful for over the past year during the course of the meal. Don’t let anyone leave the table until everyone has made a toast. It slows everything down and truly captures the spirit of the day.
Make place mats- Let the kids in the family create placemats for everyone at the table ahead of time. Eating Grandma’s mashed potatoes she made in her KitchenAid 6 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer will taste even better on these special mats. These can serve as your seating chart as well.
Volunteer- Start a new family tradition by giving back to the community. Check with your local community center or homeless shelter to see if they serve a Thanksgiving dinner. If so, volunteer as a family to work in the center’s kitchen for the day. This will teach your kids the value of giving back. It will also show the importance of helping those who are less fortunate. Or strap on your Garmin Vivoactive Fitness Smartwatch from Buydig.com and run in a charity 5k turkey trot.
Take a walk- No one is ready for dessert right after dinner anyway, so why not take that time to go on a long walk with your loved ones? Enjoy the cool, crisp autumn weather and get the blood flowing again after all that rich food.
However your family spends Thanksgiving, remember that giving thanks for the blessings in your life is what the day is all about, and family is one of the best blessings of all.
