What does 4K mean? 4K refers to the number of pixels on your TV screen – or the “image resolution”. The pixels are the tiny dots of color that make up the image you see on your TV. A pixellated image is one where the pixels are really obvious, because there aren’t many. But images with lots of pixels – like a 4K movie – generally look sharper and clearer with 4K resolution.
Why is 4K Called 4K?
A true 4K screen has 4096 x 2160 pixels. That means on your TV screen there are 3840 pixels across, and 2160 pixels vertically. That’s roughly 8.3 million pixels on the display in total. 4K gets its name because it has four times the number of pixels as a standard Full HD TV. Full HD, or 1080p screens, have 1920 pixels across, and 1080 pixels going upwards – for around two million pixels in total. So 4K just means your TV has many more pixels on the screen compared to a more common Full HD display.
4k vs 1080p
4K TVs have only been out a few years and they’re already as diverse as the 1080p TVs they’re replacing. All of the latest features are going to 4K and there are a lot of them. High dynamic range (HDR) helps brights get brighter, darks get darker, and colors pop better. Some games, DVDs, and even some streamed movies have HDR. The Xbox One S and PS4 Pro have it. Netflix also supports HDR as well as Dolby Vision. It’s not difficult technology to get a hold of and use if you have the right 4K TV. OLED is another difference between 4K and 1080p. It’s an excellent piece of technology almost exclusive to 4K. OLED offers much deeper blacks and dramatically better viewing angles than LCD. If you’re looking for the absolute best and most recent screen tech, you pretty much have to go with a 4K OLED TV. The most obvious difference between 4K and 1080p of course, is the fact that the panels themselves have more pixels. A 4K TV has four times as many pixels as a 1080p TV. That’s why they call it 4K to begin with even though the official resolution is 2160p.
4K Vs 8K
On paper, the benefits of 8k over 4k are clear. But unlike the transition between 4k and 1080p, in practice, the difference between 4k and 8k isn’t as noticeable. 8k TVs have 4 times as many pixels as their 4k counterparts and a shocking 16 times as many pixels as a 1080p TV. These extra pixels should make a significant difference in picture quality of 8k resolution vs 4k. But they only do so if you’re watching native 8k content and are sitting close enough to notice the difference. Having an 8k TV and genuine 8k content isn’t enough. There are limits to what your eyes can see. If you’re too far away from the TV, you won’t see any advantage with 8k resolution vs 4k display. 8k TVs are most beneficial when sitting extremely close to the TV – far closer, in fact, than most people are comfortable sitting. That doesn’t mean you won’t see any difference at all – it just means it won’t be significant. It also depends on the quality of the content you’re watching. Even the highest resolution TV can’t make poor quality content look good. 8k TVs represent an impressive step-up in TV capabilities.
