The Pentax K-5 is the successor to the K-7 enthusiast camera. Although it may look almost identical on the outside, the K-5 adds a 16.3 MP image sensor to the DSLR body, full 1080p HD video recording, a higher resolution 3-inch LCD screen and updated software for easier, more accurate photography.
16.3 MP Image Sensor and Improved Software for Better Photography
The biggest improvement for the K-5 is a new 16.3 MP CMOS sensor capable of a whopping ISO 51200 in expanded mode. That's enough resolution to print an 11x16" photo at 300 ppi. The sensor reduces time between shots with a continuous shooting mode at speeds up to 7 FPS for up to 40 frames. The K-5 also gets the new SAFOX IX+ AF system, which features color-detection, better auto focus point detection and improved speed, making it quicker and easier to set up a photo.
Flexibility, Lightness and Durability with a DSLR Body
Although the internals have been significantly upgraded, the K-5 retains the magnesium alloy and stainless steel body as its predecessor, the K-7. Total weight is just 670 grams, close to the weight of some professional DSLR cameras. The camera includes shake reduction courtesy of a triple-axis sensor, compensating for horizontal, vertical and rotational movement. Although compatible with a wide range of lenses, a new cross-processing mode allows color tweaking without having to change filters.
Doubles as a Camcorder with 1080p HD Video Recording Support
The K-5 can also be used as a digital camcorder, supporting 1080p HD video at speeds up to 25 frames per second. This bump in resolution comes with custom image modes to provide the right resolution and speed for your needs without having to convert to different format after recording. The camera has an internal mono microphone and support for external stereo mics. An HDMI output is included for playback.
See What You Shoot With a 3-inch LCD and Optical Viewfinder
Along with the same body, the K-5 retains its predecessor's massive 3-inch LCD screen. However, this too has seen an improvement with resolution increasing to 921k pixels. Buttons are positioned to the right of the screen for easy access when using the hand grip, and common settings like flash and shooting mode are accessible without using the on-screen menu. Worried about shooting in bright conditions? The K-5 still has an optical viewfinder. It has 100 percent coverage and supports up to 92 percent magnification.
The K-5 has the same tough lightweight DSLR body of the K-7, but it also has a long list of improvements. A new 16.3 MP sensor can produce high quality 11x16' prints, and it can also shoot HD video. Faster software with better auto focus and stability sensors make taking photos faster and easier. Add in custom image modes and an improved LCD viewfinder, and the K-5 provides easy, high quality picture and video production.
